The Purple Print

Purple Print

My blog familia Hurricane Ivan at HHIR cooked up this unique blend of Jay-Z’s vocals from the original Blueprint over 90’s production from the almighty RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.

I thought it was an extremely dope idea, though I haven’t listened yet to hear the final product so I can’t give my opinion just yet.

What do y’all think?

Shouts to Hurricane I for conceptualizing this project, Enjoy!

Name That Sample #14

NTS #14

Let’s get it poppington this morning with a lil’ Name That Sample.

You know the deal, tell me the original song & artist plus the sampling song & producer if possible. Shouts to Hurricane I for the sample set, it should be an easy one for him!

Hint: It’s a song from a Wu-Tang Clan member, on (in my opinion) the second-best solo LP from the Wu. Bonus points if you can guess my favorite.

Good luck y’all!

[Edit] Congrats to the homie CtrlAltMalik for guessing the sampling song Raekwon “Criminology” off Only Built 4 Cuban Linx produced by the one and only RZA. The original is The Sweet Inspirations’ “Why Marry.” Peace!

Happy Belated B-Day RZA

With all the festivities this weekend, I accidentally neglected to wish a happy born day to Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, best known as producer/composer RZA who turned the big 4-0 yesterday.

There’s no question that RZA a.k.a. Bobby Digital is among hip-hop’s elite. Not only has he applied his masterful sample-digging abilities and innovation on the SP-1200 to create classics for Wu-Tang Clan and its various members & affiliates but he has expanded his craft beyond the confines of rap beats to score entire movies, most notably the Kill Bill series.

Still, there’s nothing more glorious for a head than RZA’s one-of-a-kind technique – from the neck-snapping drums of “It’s Yourz,” the infectious Charmels piano sampling on “C.R.E.A.M.” to the tense, synth strings of the timeless “Triumph.”

RZA is to New York’s post-golden era as Dr. Dre is to the West’s G-funk period, as both are monumental figures in the realm of rap production. Also, did you know he produced heaters for Biggie AND Big Pun while they were alive?

While the Abbott is preparing Raekwon’s upcoming album that may never see the light of day Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2, let’s take some time to celebrate one of rap’s living legends with a couple of his instrumental collections. Enjoy!

Vintage Wu-Tang Freestyle

With Wu-Tang Clan’s Chamber Music dropping todaywhich RZA notes is “not a Wu-Tang Clan album – but it’s pretty close,” I dug up this vintage Wu freestyle from ’93 on Stanford, CA radio station KZSU.

Though only Method Man, Ghostface and Masta Killa hop on the mic, it’s a lesson in what constitutes a true cypher – not a BlackBerry-assisted pre-written “freestyle” that we see too often today. This is right around the time of “Protect Ya Neck” and Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), so you already know the caliber of rhymes to expect.

Download the freestyle below to show the children what real hip-hop is and pick up your copy of Chamber Music here, Enjoy!

Sound Table: Seven Reasons To Be Excited For OB4CLII

Raekwon & Elmo

[that pic cracks me up every time]

Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2XXL’s “6th most anticipated album of ’07,” will finally see the light of day this year. I’ve compared The Chef’s 4th solo LP to Dre’s Detox, both seeming to be industry myth’s recently.

However, as OB4CLII‘s release date of early August approaches, Rae has built the hype by dropping two dope mixtapes and several new songs.  Here’s seven tracks that will get you excited for the follow-up to his ’95 classic debut:

Beauty ft. Noreage & Joell Ortiz

Criminoloy 2 ft. Ghostface

Ill Figures ft. M.O.P. & Kool G. Rap [Clean]

New Wu ft. Ghostface & Method Man

Wu-Tang Still Rhyming

Whips & Kicks ft. AZ

Corleone, Hold the Throne
