DJ King Flow & DJ PLK To Drop An Instrumental Album Every 2 Weeks

Tasty Beatz Vol 2

Two French DJ’s/producers have their sights set on a seemingly arduous task – to drop approximately 23 albums by the end of the year.

Insanity? High expectations? An impossibilityMaybe, but King Flow & PLK along with their label Universal Indie Records are planning to drop an instrumental album every 2 weeks in 2010 for what could be an epic effort if they rise to the occasion.

The 16- and 17-year olds, respectively, cut the first in their new series dubbed Tasty Beatz Vol 2 (where’s Vol 1 at? Hmmm..) this weekend, available for a recession-friendly free.99. Though I was skeptical before I listened, these young’ns are pretty decent behind the boards as they craft some soulful, quality jazz-hop.

I’m intrigued to see how they progress with this concept, so I’ll be keeping an eye on my inbox each and every fortnight (yes, it’s a word Einstein). I’ll be sure to share, so please feel free to leave some feedback on how you feel about these jawns.

Check the link below to download. Big thanks to Jenny at Universal Indie for the heads up, Enjoy!

Oddisee – Odd Winter (Instrumental FreEP)

Odd Winter

Now here’s something to cure the Winter blues.

If you dug Capital City’s Oddisee’s seasonal instrumental offerings that dropped last year, you’ll feel his newest Odd Winter jawn too:

Oddisee’s back with another Put Me On It exclusive, the third installment in his season-themed series, Odd Winter. Not slowing down after his string of releases in 2009, he’s also preparing to release his new instrumental album Traveling Man on Mello Music. Traveling Man will be available for purchase as a digital release January 26th and vinyl & limited edition slimlines February 23rd.

Hit up the Diamond District rep’s Bandcamp link below for a free download, Enjoy!

New Video from RJD2’s The Colossus & Upcoming Tour Dates

Other than the slight weakness of the poppy The Third Hand, Ramble John “RJD2” Krohn has maintained a strong track record throughout his almost decade-long tenure.

I was thoroughly impressed by 2009’s Tin Foil Hat EP (earning spot #23 on my list of the Best Instrumental Albums of 2009), a swift restoration of the Ohio producer’s instrumental soundscapes introduced to the masses on ’02’s Dead Ringer and ’04’s Since We Last Spoke.

Hopefully, RJD2 sticks to his guns on his upcoming album The Colossus, coming soon on his recently-created RJ’s Electrical Connections label. Judging by the leaks, it should be a sweet return-to-form that fans like myself have been requesting for years.

He’s also created an iPhone app alongside Future Audio Workshop calledTouch Mix where fans can remix cuts and hear samples from the upcoming LP. One question though, where’s the love for us BlackBerry users, mayne?!

Anyways, check out his video up top for “Let There Be Horns” directed by Thom Glunt for a preview of what to expect. He’s going on tour beginning in Washington D.C. this weekend, so I’ve posted the dates below.

The Colossus drops Tuesday, January 19th. Shout to the man himself for the heads up. Support the artists, Enjoy!

Introducing: shano

Music is what life sounds like.

-Eric Olsen.

Some stories are just impossible to express in words.

So, when New York producer Shane “shano” Harris wanted to tell his personal story, he opted for the only medium natural to him – music

His story manifested itself in his first solo LP A Butterfly In Boston, an album that relies on jazzy samples, soulful loops and a plethora of kicks-n-snares to document a tale of love, pleasure and eventual heartache. The free digital album is available here or here for a direct download link.

Recently, I got the chance to chop it up with shano in the wake of his debut. We discussed his approach, why the album takes place in Boston despite his New York roots, which producer he’d most want to observe in the studio, and what he’s going to do now that he’s told his first story.

Dom Corleone: Tell the people where you’re from and how old you are.

shano: I’m currently residing in Astoria, N.Y. and I’m 25 years old. I grew up in a small town on Long Island called Sound Beach which I doubt anyone has heard of. So, it’s near the Port Jeff area.. North Shore of Suffolk County.

DC: What originally got you into producing? A background in reading & playing music or was it something you just up and tried one day?

s: Actually, I don’t play any instruments. I had to take music theory classes in college but my reading is very amateur. I can do it, but it takes me awhile.  In high school, I really fell in love with hip hop and some of the producers that were out at the time.

I really felt like it was something I wanted to do. With the whole sampling aspect, I felt like I could find parts of old songs and rework them into something new. It was kind of a gradual “maybe-I-can-actually-do-this” type thing that just grew and grew as I went along.

DC: So when would you say you started getting serious with it?

s: In high school, I bought my first sampler and I was definitely the kid who bought things and didn’t use them. I just expected something to happen. Once I went away to college in ’01, I started to meet more people with the same interests and really got serious about it a few years after that. I can’t pinpoint the date, but I would say ‘03-04 roughly.
