DJ Heat – Late Night With The Roots (Mixtape)

Late Night With The Roots (Mixtape)

Questo & Black keep their vision to the sky, the rest have their eyes on the road. Fitting.

I’ve been a long-time, outspoken fan and critic of the Legendary Roots Crew. When they became the house band for Fallon’s new gig after Def Jam put so much time into marketing their CDs (#sarcasm), I was ecstatic that they’re hard work was finally recognized on a larger scale. Plus, after raiding the OkayPlayer store yesterday during its 50% discount sale, it’s only right I post this.

The generous DJ Heat recently compiled all of The Roots’ live renditions to date with guests of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Performances include Q-Tip, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Luda, Ghost, Rae, and, well you can read the tracklist for yourself. It showcases the Philly band’s single “How I Got Over” in its pure form, plus that Clipse set is damn near phenomenal.

Download link and track list below. Shout to 2DB and Heather for the heads up. Artwork by Shake. Oh, and props to the only whiteboy in the group, bassist Owen Biddle, for holding it down for us soulful yet melanin-deficit brothas, Enjoy!

Dysposable Heroes Presents – Genius vs. Genius (An Evening with Ray Charles & GZA)

Genius vs Genius

I haven’t listened to this yet, however it’s a combo of two legendary artists in my humble opinion, so I’m posting it for the HTT faithful.

J-Mass and Zero One, collectively dubbed the Dysposable Heroes, crafted this blend-tape. Here’s the deal:

This is a collection of 12 tracks of GZA remixes of his classic material behind heavy samples of classic and hard to find Ray Charles albums, with all production done by Gutter Water Music’s very own Dysposable Heroes. This is a concept remix project, with no ties to the artists or their respective labels, estates, etc. and is for promotional use only. Please burn this and give it to anyone you think might enjoy it!

Wu-heads and soul supporters alike should dig it. From the tracklist itself, I see some of my choice GZA jams like “Publicity,” “Fame” and “Triumph” blended with selections from Charles’ soulful blues discography.

For more info about Dysposable Heroes, peep their website.

Much respect due to my homie BMUSE at Always Hustle for spotting this, Enjoy!

Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek) – The RE:Union mixed by Statik Selektah

The RE:Union

For the first official mixtape post of the year, we’ve got a heater compliments of Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek and Statik Selektah.

The Massachusetts-bred DJ/Producer spun together a fresh mix of new, old and rare Reflection Eternal material, including the banger “Just Begun” with Jay Electronica, J. Cola & Mos Def.

I’m dumb excited to hear how Kweli & Hi-Tek sound on the new jawn “Hang Ups” and how Statik mixed this particular tape, since he’s a beast when it comes to sequencing and scratching.

Check back for more updates on the upcoming RE album and any leaks that hit the ‘net.

Shout to Year of the Blacksmith for the heads up, Enjoy!

Russel Fong & DJ Matt Cali – The Little X-Mas Tape

Front Cover

It was tough to hold off on posting this beauty of a mix by crate digger Russel Fong and DJ Matt Cali, but I promised myself I’d wait ’til Christmas Eve. Lucky for y’all, it’s here!

Both Russel and Matt have a knack for splicing old school treats with modern flavor, which is evident on this holiday-themed mix. Listen as Stevie Wonder’s “What Christmas Means To Me” and Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” flow between cheerful samples and jingling bells. Also featured on the tape are jams from Marvin Gaye, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys and more.

As Matt explains it:

Russel and I were on the phone together discussing some upcoming themes for new mixtapes and we both expressed are displeasure with corny holiday music. Russel mentioned he had some good old school jams and I had a couple of favorites myself so I fired up the turntables and there you have it.” Russel adds, “We just wanted to keep it short and sweet and play some good holiday jams.”

Well, they certainly put together an impressive mix. Shouts to both of the fellas for the heads up, click the covers or download link below and spin it for some holiday goodness. Enjoy!

Buy J. Cole’s “Lights Please” on iTunes

Lights Please

What started with a post featuring my favorite song from J Cole’s The Warm Up has turned into the most popular post in HTT‘s 6-month history (over 15,000 page views since July!), probably because I typed up the full lyrics to the mastered version as soon as it dropped.

Now, Cole & Roc Nation have decided to push “Lights Please” as the digital single, which is a great decision in my eyes. Since the first time I heard it, I felt it had the potential to achieve enormous success as a single because it blends the right amount of catchiness with real lyrics that many people can relate to. Plus, as Hov’s protege, people expect Cole to be talented from the jump – this song will reinforce that notion.

Do your part to support one of the year’s best songs by grabbing it at iTunes  for less than a 6-piece order of chicken nuggets.

And don’t forget to tell everyone where to find the lyrics – I really appreciate the love & support that everyone has shown to this historic post.

Special shouts to Nation and his new blog The Calm for the heads up, Enjoy!

Deadly Duo (Nas & Jay-Z) Mixtape

Nas & Jay

The homie Hevehitta hit me off with his new mixtape with DJ Unexpected entitled Deadly Duo (Nas & Jay-Z). Seeing that Nasir and Hov are two of the best to ever do it, downloading this one is a no-brainer

It’s loaded with demo tracks, rare unreleased joints including a Nas collabo with Kool G Rap, and two “Look What I Found” break-beat segments where Unexpected goes IN on the samples used for each MC’s respective classic mid-90’s album. This looks like an essential part of any hip-hop head’s digital crates.

To get the full tape as a podcast, click here to check out Podomatic. You can also purchase this particular tape for 8 bucks here and receive another mixtape for free.99. I mean, who doesn’t like free shit?

Track list & download link below. Shout to Hevehitta and the good folks at Diggers Union for the hook up, Enjoy!
