Not Your Average Valentine’s Day-Themed Mixes.. DJ Matt Cali & Russel Fong | Cosmo Baker

Whether or not you celebrate the holiday dedicated to men attempting to impress women who possess unrealistic expectations* St. Valentine, anyone can appreciate some fresh vibes.

First up is a spankin’ new mix from some of HTT‘s good friends, turntable master Matt Cali and music historian Russel Fong. I’ll let Cali tell it:

… If you are looking for a sappy slow jam mixtape, you are obviously unfamiliar with the way these two get down (pause). Luvsick is a perfect blend of all types of love songs ranging from REO Speedwagon, Radiohead, Teddy Pendergrass, to the likes of Slum Village, Jodeci and Lil Wayne. And like all Russel Fong and Matt Cali presentations, it is mixed in true school turntable fashion.

Now that sounds dope, don’t it?

For the traditionalists, expert create-digger Cosmo Baker splices soul and classic R&B on his Valentine’s Roll Mix. Featuring songs by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, and of course Prince, this will help the fellas get their ladies in that special mood.

Bump these while you do whatever it is you do this weekend. Don’t forget guys – wrap it up be safe.

Shouts to Russel & Matt, plus the gracious homie Gotty & Co at TSS for the second jawn. Enjoy!

*I keed, I keed. Y’all lovers do y’all thang.

DJ Shadow – Freeform, All-Vinyl DJ Set – October 31, 2009 in Los Angeles

DJ Shadow

Well, I’ll be damned.

I haven’t seen this mix by the everlasting Joshua “DJ Shadow” Davis, a personal favorite of mine, posted anywhere besides my local torrent community. So it’s only right I share this special live mix with everyone.

Shadow spun this particular blend of musical beauty last Halloween night at LA’s Legendary Park Plaza for KCRW’s Masquerade Ball. He rocked his now famous sampling technique amid pinpoint scratching and nifty mixing for his set, which clocked in at a little under two hours.

Oh, did I mention he played Serato-free? To you newjacks out there, this means he lugged crate upon crate busting at the seams with vinyl (gasp!) to represent with two turntables and a sampler like few can these days, for the true school.

I’d much rather have been scoping pretty ladies to DJ Shadow’s tune’s then whatever lame dime-a-dozen DJ played where I was that night, but at least I can envision what it would have been like to be there thanks to whoever recorded this.

Shouts to the generous folks of ****.cd (what, you thought I’d give my secrets away? You crazy, homes) for seeding this torrent, Enjoy!

$port – You’ll $hoot Your Eye Out (Mix)

$port

My apologies. I’ve been so focused on my Best of the Decade posts and compiling my year-end lists that I’ve let some dope music slip through the cracks.

Don’t worry, I’m here to drop off a mix by the producing-half of Chris Connery and HTT homie $port entitled You’ll $hoot Your Eye Out, a play on a famous quote from some Christmas movie.

Shout to the man himself, feel free to hit him or me up to share your thoughts. Enjoy!

Russel Fong & DJ Matt Cali – The Little X-Mas Tape

Front Cover

It was tough to hold off on posting this beauty of a mix by crate digger Russel Fong and DJ Matt Cali, but I promised myself I’d wait ’til Christmas Eve. Lucky for y’all, it’s here!

Both Russel and Matt have a knack for splicing old school treats with modern flavor, which is evident on this holiday-themed mix. Listen as Stevie Wonder’s “What Christmas Means To Me” and Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” flow between cheerful samples and jingling bells. Also featured on the tape are jams from Marvin Gaye, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys and more.

As Matt explains it:

Russel and I were on the phone together discussing some upcoming themes for new mixtapes and we both expressed are displeasure with corny holiday music. Russel mentioned he had some good old school jams and I had a couple of favorites myself so I fired up the turntables and there you have it.” Russel adds, “We just wanted to keep it short and sweet and play some good holiday jams.”

Well, they certainly put together an impressive mix. Shouts to both of the fellas for the heads up, click the covers or download link below and spin it for some holiday goodness. Enjoy!

Live Re-Mixing 101

KNK

I’ve been meaning to post this for a minute, but this annoying thing called real life got in the way of blogging right quick.

I got this mix in my inbox last week and I’ve been bumping it steadily ever since.

Remix crew Keys N Krates, comprised of DJ Jr Flo, keyboardist Matisse & drummer Adam Tune, flip some classic hip-hop records for an organic, real-time podcast called Live Re-Mixing 101 presented by Urb Magazine.

Listen as Matisse reinterprets Just Blaze’s instantly-recognizable melody from Jay-Z’s “Public Service Annoucement.” Also, hear Jr Flo scratch the Aretha Franklin sample from Mos Def’s “Miss Fat Booty” and Lauryn Hill’s eloquent vocals from “Fu Ge La” float smoothly over Tune’s live drums. Definitely ain’t no fakin’ the funk on this one!

I highly recommend turning the volume up and letting this half-hour podcast mix rock. Whether you’re in the whip or at the crib with your peoples, I’ll bet my bottom dollar this impresses.

To find out more about Keys N Krates, hit up KeysNCrates.com or their blog

Shout to Armando for sending this over, Enjoy!

Sample Junkies

Sample Junkies Front

Since I’m a bit under the weather, it’s always nice to get quality stuff in the inbox.

Here’s the second mix from the Sunshine State’s honorable DJ/ turntablist Matt Cali and the Empire State’s musical mastermind/graphic designer Russel Fong, aptly dubbed Sample Junkies due to its nostalgic feel. It’s invigorating, really.

Sample Junkies is a three-part compilation of classic hip-hop samples and breaks mixed fluidly by Cali. Fong has chosen the music of Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Dells, David Porter, The Charmels, Michel Gonet, Menahan Street Band, The Jackson 5, Ramp, Ramon Morris, Esther Bryde, 9th Creations, Monk Higgins, Sting, Smilin Billy Suite, Screamin Jay Hawkins, Aretha Franklin, Jack Mayborn,Roy Ayers plus plenty more to serve as the soundtrack to your trip back in time.

I’ve praised the effort of this dope duo before, so expect this mix to impress once again. No track list necessary. True sample heads, this is what you’re fiendin’ for.

Shout to the good homie Matt himself for hooking this up. Spin this tonight and reminisce, Enjoy!
