Writers Build: The Best Non-Hip-Hop Albums of 2009

The Best Non-Hip-Hop Albums of 2009

Gramatically-incorrect, but who cares?!

We’ ain’t done just yet, Writers Build is still in full effect!

And you probably thought all I listened to was hip-hop.. Ha! Gotcha.

In between spinning Mos Def and Raekwon this year, me and my homie Jaap van der Doelen (of The Rap Up and Maasland FM fame) took some time to expand our horizons beyond the realm of rap. What we found were some extremely great projects by a gang of non-hip-hoppers.

Our lists cover many typesof music, including R&B, pop, reggae, soul, dubstep, jazz, rock and even afro-funk (yes, I may have made that genre up, but it’s true). Check these out when you’re not in the mood for neck-snapping beats or lyrical onslaughts.

Click the covers or links to support the artists, Enjoy!

Stevie Wonder & John Legend [Live]

Stevie Wonder

WordPress is drivin’ me crazy. I’m having trouble embedding videos so if it doesn’t show up below, click here to see the video at some bootleg hip-hop website.

I saw this Sunday on the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert special on HBO, and I been waiting for it to make its way to the web.

The legendary Stevie Wonder brings John Legend on stage to tribute Michael Jackson, singing “The Way You Make Me Feel.” At one point, Stevie is so overwhelmed by emotion that he breaks down during the performance.

Powerful stuff, and well worth a viewing. Big thanks to the good homie Khal at Rock The Dub for the vid, Enjoy!

Event Reminder: Ghostface x Beatnick & K-Salaam Tonight

Tonight

Here’s your friendly reminder that MySpace Music, Socialight & Digiwaxx are presenting Ghostface Killah live tonight at Hiro Ballroom NYC alongside production duo Beatnick & K-Salaam.

Doors open at 8 PM, but since this is a free show I’d recommend showing up crazy early. William Cooper and I will be in the building promoting Beware of the Pale Horse so come say what’s up if you see us out there. Dallas Penn might be joining us as well.

Ghost will be promoting his latest effort Ghostdini: The Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City while Beatnick & K-Salaam should be rocking songs from their fly remix album Never Can Say Goodbye featuring reinterpretations of classics from Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

Download Never Can Say Goodbye below and support Tony Starks (and my Amazon account) by scooping his album here. Shout to Freestyle Madness Blog for the link, Enjoy!

Name That Sample #7: MJ Edition

Sample Map

[Edit] Congrats to Ron for the correct answer! The MJ song is “With A Child’s Heart” off the album Music & Me, sampled by Big Punisher’s “You Ain’t A Killer” produced by Young Lord.

I think it’s only right we partake in paying tribute to Michael Jackson by including one of his songs for this version of Name That Sample.

See if you can name the original MJ song and album in addition to the hip-hop song that sampled it.

Good luck!

Fathers of Rap: Michael Jackson

MJ

Since I’m still in a daze from Michael Jackson’s passing yesterday, I’m glad that the homie Ivan from Hip Hop Is Read put together two tribute compilations celebrating the hip-hop music that would never have been possible without the King of Pop.

The first mix is songs sampling MJ’s early career with the Jackson 5 while the second is his more recent work.  I was unaware Luda’s “One More Drink” or Kanye & T-Pain’s “Good Life” sampled MJ, I guess you really do learn something new everyday.

Big thanks to Ivan for doing his part in preserving the legacy of the late, great musical and cultural icon. Check the track list and download link below. Play these and remember – legends never truly die.

R.I.P. King of Pop

So I was planning on doing a track-by-track review of Wu-Tang’s Chamber Music that leaked today, but the news about Michael Jackson’s death sideswiped me.

At this point I’m still in shock that the King of Pop died, so I will leave you with my favorite MJ jam “Billie Jean” while I let it sink in. Maybe I’ll prepare some better, more profound words. Or maybe I’ll just play Thriller on repeat all night whille searching for some.
