Buy J. Cole’s “Lights Please” on iTunes

Lights Please

What started with a post featuring my favorite song from J Cole’s The Warm Up has turned into the most popular post in HTT‘s 6-month history (over 15,000 page views since July!), probably because I typed up the full lyrics to the mastered version as soon as it dropped.

Now, Cole & Roc Nation have decided to push “Lights Please” as the digital single, which is a great decision in my eyes. Since the first time I heard it, I felt it had the potential to achieve enormous success as a single because it blends the right amount of catchiness with real lyrics that many people can relate to. Plus, as Hov’s protege, people expect Cole to be talented from the jump – this song will reinforce that notion.

Do your part to support one of the year’s best songs by grabbing it at iTunes  for less than a 6-piece order of chicken nuggets.

And don’t forget to tell everyone where to find the lyrics – I really appreciate the love & support that everyone has shown to this historic post.

Special shouts to Nation and his new blog The Calm for the heads up, Enjoy!

J. Cole – Lights Please (Mastered) & Full Lyrics

Warm Up

While the internets wait for Shawn Carter’s new single with Rih Rih and ‘Yeezy, we’ll have to settle for a new version of an extremely dope track from Hov’s Roc Nation signee J. Cole.

I updated my original post with the full lyrics, but it seems that North Carolina’s promising young MC liberated the mastered version of the song of the year best jam off his Warm Up mixtape, “Lights Please.”

Peep the download link below and the full-length lyrics after the jump. Song spotted at Nah Right, lyrics typed by yours truly.. Enjoy!

Download: J. Cole – Lights Please (Mastered) [Dom’s note: New Link as of 2/7/10!]

Random Lyrics & Sample: OutKast – Claimin’ True

OutKast

Rockin’ with the iTunes on shuffle today, I came across one of my favorite jams from OutKast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik that I had to share with all my fellow hip-hop heads.

On “Claimin’ True,” Big Boi and Andre spit that real ish that permeated their early catalog. This here track is a fine example of the lyrical onslaught that the duo was will always be capable of whenever they stepped into the Dungeon. Quotables abound.

As previously noted, Organized Noize Productions interpolated Steve Miller Band’s “The Window” for the gritty instrumental. As Busta Rhymes would say, this one breaks your neck.

Check the song and original below, then the lyrics after the jump. Enjoy!

One Day

One Day

Here at HTT, I am a firm believer that there really are only two types of musicgood and Soulja Boy Chester French bad. Though my primary focus is on hip-hop and the music that has influenced the genre, I want to spread good music of all sorts. Which brings me to Matisyahu’s newest single, “One Day.”

My younger sister put me on to the Hassidic Jew’s reggae-rap a few years back and after I saw him perform alongside the Wailers in the Big Apple, I gained respect for his vision and have been a supportive fan ever since.

Similar to Matis’ past efforts, “One Day” is an uplifting, quixotic anthem that attempts to unify the people. It’s off his upcoming album Light, set for an August 25th release date.

I typed up the lyrics beneath the video, plus provided a link to purchase the track at Amazon. As an added bonus, I posted the DJ Michael Watts remix of his hit “Jerusalem” just because.

Shouts to Adam for the video, Enjoy!

Sometimes I lay under the moon
And thank God I’m breathing
And I pray, don’t take me soon
‘Cause I am here for a reason

Sometimes in my tears I drown
But I never let it get me down
So when negativity surrounds
I know some day it’ll all turn around, because..

All my life I’ve been waiting for
I’ve been praying for
For the people to say
That we don’t wanna fight no more

There’ll be no more war
And our children will play

One day, one day
One day
One day, one day
One day

It’s not about win or lose
‘Cause we all lose
When they feed on the souls of the innocent
Blood-drenched pavement
Keep on moving
Though the water stay raging

In this maze, you can lose your way (your way)
It may drive you crazy
But don’t let it phase you, no way (no way)

Sometimes in my tears I drown
But I never let it get me down
So when negativity surrounds
I know some day it’ll all turn around, because..

All my life I’ve been waiting for
I’ve been praying for
For the people to say
That we don’t wanna fight no more
There’ll be no more war
And our children will play

One day, one day
One day
One day, one day
One day

One day this world’ll change
Treat people the same
Stop with the violence
Stall with the hate

One day we’ll all be free
And proud to be
Under the same sun

Singin’ songs of freedom like

One day, one day
One day, one day..

All my life I’ve been waiting for
I’ve been praying for
For the people to say
That we don’t wanna fight no more
There’ll be no more war
And our children will play

One day, one day
One day
One day, one day
One day

Lights Please

J. Cole

I been listening to J. Cole’s mixtape The Warm Up after hearing & reading good things. I admittedly slept on dude before now for no apparent reason, which was a bad look on my part. The North Carolina MC is the only cat Shawn Carter has signed to his new imprint Roc Nation, so I had decided to let the new tape rotate.

One cut in particular caught my ear early. On “Lights Please,” Cole elaborates on the ups and downs (okay, mostly ups) of being intimate with the opposite sex – which we all know is no easy task, especially when one is trying to change the world.

He proceeds to drop knowledge, calls out dead-beat daddy’s, then eventually marinates in the sensuality of the female, um, “aura.”

Shouts to Complex Mag for the link and J Gill and B Dot for the heads up . I typed up some of the lyrics for “Lights Please” below for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
