Buy J. Cole’s “Lights Please” on iTunes

Lights Please

What started with a post featuring my favorite song from J Cole’s The Warm Up has turned into the most popular post in HTT‘s 6-month history (over 15,000 page views since July!), probably because I typed up the full lyrics to the mastered version as soon as it dropped.

Now, Cole & Roc Nation have decided to push “Lights Please” as the digital single, which is a great decision in my eyes. Since the first time I heard it, I felt it had the potential to achieve enormous success as a single because it blends the right amount of catchiness with real lyrics that many people can relate to. Plus, as Hov’s protege, people expect Cole to be talented from the jump – this song will reinforce that notion.

Do your part to support one of the year’s best songs by grabbing it at iTunes  for less than a 6-piece order of chicken nuggets.

And don’t forget to tell everyone where to find the lyrics – I really appreciate the love & support that everyone has shown to this historic post.

Special shouts to Nation and his new blog The Calm for the heads up, Enjoy!

A Strange Arrangement

Mayer Hawthorne

I’ll admit. I wasn’t quite sold on Mayer Hawthorne, Stone Throw Records’ nu-Motown crooner, the first time I heard him. I spun an advanced copy of his debut A Strange Arrangement but wasn’t quite in the right mood at the time. After reading a number of positive reviews, I decided maybe I wasn’t giving it an honest chance.

Man, am I glad I did.

The Ann Arbor, Michigan native is extremely talented not just as a falsetto singer but as a multi-instrumentalist. He pays homage to doo wop and 60’s soul while intertwining break beats and Dilla-esque drums for a modern take on a vintage sound. I hear equal moments of Smokey Robinson, The Tempations and Robin Thicke in his voice – pretty damn special, indeed.

Earlier this week, A Strange Arrangement cracked the Top 10 on iTunes store. Dude has also been praised by ?uestlove and Justin Timberlake. It’d be a shame to miss out on some good music to spin for Labor Day weekend.

Scoop your copy of Mayer Hawthorne’s album on iTunes, and I’ll leave a nice sample of what to expect. Here’s the single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” plus a sweet remix by Astronote.

Shouts to Martin from A-Side, Enjoy!

Closer / Pimp Dreams

Deep Rooted

Keelay & Zaire

We’ve got two new fresh tracks from some artists that might fly under your radar but definitely deserve your attention.

First up is a new cut from San Diego soul-hop collective Deep Rooted featuring Exile behind the boards. The crew’s feel-good music continues on “Closer,” with a dope melody sung by Just Brea and verses from Johaz and Mr. Brady. Be on the lookout for more leaks from their album D.E.E.P. R.O.O.T.E.D. on Clear Label Records, commanded by Tajai of Souls of Mischief. Shouts to Audible Treats for the MP3.

Next up is some close fam of HTT, new music from production duo Keelay & Zaire featuring Slo-Mo. “Pimp Dreams” boasts the unique technique that Kee & Zee debuted earlier this year on Ridin’ High, one of the best projects of the first half of ’09 (available now on iTunes). This particular song is off the Potholes In My Blog Presents… Transmitting Live Volume One mixed by DJ Traumatix. Shouts to the good homie Reyn for the audio, Enjoy!
