He Had A Dream.. And So Do We

Greg Street Presents - Dr. King - The Speeches

On this very special holiday, let’s all vow to work hard each and every day to fulfill Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dream. We’ve come a long way, but we’re not there just yet.

Celebrate the ongoing fight with Greg Street’s quality tape of some of Dr. King’s most inspirational words over Dre beats. I also hooked up an excerpt from the original “I Have A Dream” audio below, in hopes that all will hear his eloquent voice and determined tone. Shout to the TSS familia. Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Day, Enjoy!

DJ Shadow – Freeform, All-Vinyl DJ Set – October 31, 2009 in Los Angeles

DJ Shadow

Well, I’ll be damned.

I haven’t seen this mix by the everlasting Joshua “DJ Shadow” Davis, a personal favorite of mine, posted anywhere besides my local torrent community. So it’s only right I share this special live mix with everyone.

Shadow spun this particular blend of musical beauty last Halloween night at LA’s Legendary Park Plaza for KCRW’s Masquerade Ball. He rocked his now famous sampling technique amid pinpoint scratching and nifty mixing for his set, which clocked in at a little under two hours.

Oh, did I mention he played Serato-free? To you newjacks out there, this means he lugged crate upon crate busting at the seams with vinyl (gasp!) to represent with two turntables and a sampler like few can these days, for the true school.

I’d much rather have been scoping pretty ladies to DJ Shadow’s tune’s then whatever lame dime-a-dozen DJ played where I was that night, but at least I can envision what it would have been like to be there thanks to whoever recorded this.

Shouts to the generous folks of ****.cd (what, you thought I’d give my secrets away? You crazy, homes) for seeding this torrent, Enjoy!

Tiye Phoenix – Down (The Armageddon Theme)

Tiye Phoenix

Here’s a fresh leak by the homegirl Tiye Phoenix, who should have been on your radar long before now with last year’s Half Woman, Half Amazin’.

“Down (The Armageddon Theme)” is off Kevin Nottingham, DJ Booth & HipHopDX‘s recent mixtape HiPNOTT Records 2010 Takeover. Scoop the full tape at DJ Booth here.

Chalk this track up as another example of why I call Tiye the best up-and-coming female in the game (Nicki who?). Not only does she spit hot fiyah (no Dylan), she also controlled the MPC and flexed her vocal muscles on the hook. Look for something special soon here at HTT featuring none other than Tiye P.

Shouts to Kev for sending this one over, Enjoy!

Writers Build: The Best Non-Hip-Hop Albums of 2009

The Best Non-Hip-Hop Albums of 2009

Gramatically-incorrect, but who cares?!

We’ ain’t done just yet, Writers Build is still in full effect!

And you probably thought all I listened to was hip-hop.. Ha! Gotcha.

In between spinning Mos Def and Raekwon this year, me and my homie Jaap van der Doelen (of The Rap Up and Maasland FM fame) took some time to expand our horizons beyond the realm of rap. What we found were some extremely great projects by a gang of non-hip-hoppers.

Our lists cover many typesof music, including R&B, pop, reggae, soul, dubstep, jazz, rock and even afro-funk (yes, I may have made that genre up, but it’s true). Check these out when you’re not in the mood for neck-snapping beats or lyrical onslaughts.

Click the covers or links to support the artists, Enjoy!

DJ Heat – Late Night With The Roots (Mixtape)

Late Night With The Roots (Mixtape)

Questo & Black keep their vision to the sky, the rest have their eyes on the road. Fitting.

I’ve been a long-time, outspoken fan and critic of the Legendary Roots Crew. When they became the house band for Fallon’s new gig after Def Jam put so much time into marketing their CDs (#sarcasm), I was ecstatic that they’re hard work was finally recognized on a larger scale. Plus, after raiding the OkayPlayer store yesterday during its 50% discount sale, it’s only right I post this.

The generous DJ Heat recently compiled all of The Roots’ live renditions to date with guests of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Performances include Q-Tip, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Luda, Ghost, Rae, and, well you can read the tracklist for yourself. It showcases the Philly band’s single “How I Got Over” in its pure form, plus that Clipse set is damn near phenomenal.

Download link and track list below. Shout to 2DB and Heather for the heads up. Artwork by Shake. Oh, and props to the only whiteboy in the group, bassist Owen Biddle, for holding it down for us soulful yet melanin-deficit brothas, Enjoy!

New Video from RJD2’s The Colossus & Upcoming Tour Dates

Other than the slight weakness of the poppy The Third Hand, Ramble John “RJD2” Krohn has maintained a strong track record throughout his almost decade-long tenure.

I was thoroughly impressed by 2009’s Tin Foil Hat EP (earning spot #23 on my list of the Best Instrumental Albums of 2009), a swift restoration of the Ohio producer’s instrumental soundscapes introduced to the masses on ’02’s Dead Ringer and ’04’s Since We Last Spoke.

Hopefully, RJD2 sticks to his guns on his upcoming album The Colossus, coming soon on his recently-created RJ’s Electrical Connections label. Judging by the leaks, it should be a sweet return-to-form that fans like myself have been requesting for years.

He’s also created an iPhone app alongside Future Audio Workshop calledTouch Mix where fans can remix cuts and hear samples from the upcoming LP. One question though, where’s the love for us BlackBerry users, mayne?!

Anyways, check out his video up top for “Let There Be Horns” directed by Thom Glunt for a preview of what to expect. He’s going on tour beginning in Washington D.C. this weekend, so I’ve posted the dates below.

The Colossus drops Tuesday, January 19th. Shout to the man himself for the heads up. Support the artists, Enjoy!

Hold the Throne Presents Writers Build: The Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2009

The Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2009

It’s all come down to this. All the effort, pain, and struggle from artists and bloggers alike culminates now as three writers’ crown the Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2009.

Aight, so I’m exagerrating a lil’ bit. And, admittedly, I’m lying through my teeth. We actually still have some more lists after this. But this is like the Rose Bowl – the grandaddy of ’em all!

I went kinda crazy with this one, because this type of ish excites me. It was an exceptional year for individual tracks, as we pulled songs from albums, mixtapes, CD singles, and even vinyl to present you with 3 separate lists of dopeness. These aren’t your averages lists, as you’ll see when you peruse them. We flipped it differently, I hope you’ll have fun while listening.

My fellow contributors this time are:

Jaap van der Doelen, The Rap Up Contributing Writer & Host of WildStyle FM on Maasland FM

J Nicholson, Cornerstone Promotion National Mixshow/ Lifestyle Marketing

I’ve hooked up download links below for you to scoop each list in its entirety. If you’d rather me upload each track, well too bad! drop me a line and I’ll see what I can do.

Hold the Throne’s Writers Build proudly presents the Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2009, Enjoy!
