Expanding Horizons: Emancipator – Safe in the Steep Cliffs

Emancipator

As far as I’m concerned, and I’ve said this countless times before, there are only two types of musicgood and badEmancipator falls in the former category.

I first heard of the Portland, Oregon producer/multi-instrumentalist last year when I stumbled upon his 2008 opus Soon It Will Be Cold Enough. You know that feeling when you’ve found something you know you’ll treasure for a while? Yup, that one. You could only imagine how I felt when I saw that his new album Safe in the Steep Cliffs dropped yesterday.

If freshly layered, organic soundscapes are your thing (how could they not be?), then you’ve come to the right place. Incorporating a variety of instruments including trumpets, violins, guitars, clarinets and even mandolins to develop a truly unique style, his albums possess a natural dynamic as they flow swiftly from track to track like a river snaking down a mountainside (or something like that, you get the point!).

I’ve featured some previews below, my select choices of what I believe to be his best work. I respect any producer that can flip Mobb Deep and Sigur Ros on the same jawn, and make it dope. You can purchase both albums by clicking the links or covers. The man himself describes his latest project:

Safe In The Steep Cliffs represents the tightest, most unique, most organic beats I’ve made in the last three years. This album has a new palette of sounds and samples from around the world, including more original recordings (guitar/violin/mandolin/banjo) and new guest artists including Japanese jazz musician Uyama Hiroto. It’s ominous and overgrown, dense and ethereal. And epic. Always epic.

Emancipator will be touring parts of the U.S. starting February to promote his new album. Check out the previews below and visit EmancipatorMusic.com if you like what you hear. Support the only type of music that matters – good. Vibe to this and leave feedback if you get a chance after you listen, Enjoy!

DJ Shadow – Freeform, All-Vinyl DJ Set – October 31, 2009 in Los Angeles

DJ Shadow

Well, I’ll be damned.

I haven’t seen this mix by the everlasting Joshua “DJ Shadow” Davis, a personal favorite of mine, posted anywhere besides my local torrent community. So it’s only right I share this special live mix with everyone.

Shadow spun this particular blend of musical beauty last Halloween night at LA’s Legendary Park Plaza for KCRW’s Masquerade Ball. He rocked his now famous sampling technique amid pinpoint scratching and nifty mixing for his set, which clocked in at a little under two hours.

Oh, did I mention he played Serato-free? To you newjacks out there, this means he lugged crate upon crate busting at the seams with vinyl (gasp!) to represent with two turntables and a sampler like few can these days, for the true school.

I’d much rather have been scoping pretty ladies to DJ Shadow’s tune’s then whatever lame dime-a-dozen DJ played where I was that night, but at least I can envision what it would have been like to be there thanks to whoever recorded this.

Shouts to the generous folks of ****.cd (what, you thought I’d give my secrets away? You crazy, homes) for seeding this torrent, Enjoy!

A Tribe Called Quest Weekend: Tribe Vibes Vol. 1-3 [Original Samples]

Tribe

Since it’s A Tribe Called Quest Weekend here at HTT, I’m goin’ in. What better time to drop this post than now?

Tribe Vibes Volumes 1-3 is an epic vinyl collection compiled by Strictly Breaks for the true hip-hop head. Much respect due to T.R.O.Y., where I first spotted these enormous lists of samples spanning Tribe’s prolific discography. This is an absolutely essential download, so I re-upped my own links plus included the original post.

Check below for the track lists & download links. I can’t express how much I appreciate the good folks at T.R.O.Y. Strictly Breaks and Ivan for putting me on to these projects. Word on the street ‘net is there might be a Volume 4 coming soon. Stay tuned, Enjoy!

OutKast Instrumentals

OutKast

Just as the title says, I’m hookin up some OutKast instrumental albums today, ATLiens and Aquemini in particular. You can find the samples to all their albums on the right sidebar. With these, you’ll be able to focus in on some of Organized Noize’s best productions.

If you have any of their other instrumental albums or individual tracks, hit me in the comments or e-mail. Much appreciated!

Speaking of the greatest duo in hip-hop OutKast.. What happened to Sir Luscious Left Foot dropping this year? And an Andre 3K solo LP? AND an OutKast album? At this rate, we won’t hear any new stuff from these two until the most talentless rapper alive Gucci Mane gets out of jail. I’m praying that they get it together sooner than that.

Check both albums in one link below, Enjoy!
