Russel Fong & DJ Matt Cali – The Little X-Mas Tape

Front Cover

It was tough to hold off on posting this beauty of a mix by crate digger Russel Fong and DJ Matt Cali, but I promised myself I’d wait ’til Christmas Eve. Lucky for y’all, it’s here!

Both Russel and Matt have a knack for splicing old school treats with modern flavor, which is evident on this holiday-themed mix. Listen as Stevie Wonder’s “What Christmas Means To Me” and Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” flow between cheerful samples and jingling bells. Also featured on the tape are jams from Marvin Gaye, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys and more.

As Matt explains it:

Russel and I were on the phone together discussing some upcoming themes for new mixtapes and we both expressed are displeasure with corny holiday music. Russel mentioned he had some good old school jams and I had a couple of favorites myself so I fired up the turntables and there you have it.” Russel adds, “We just wanted to keep it short and sweet and play some good holiday jams.”

Well, they certainly put together an impressive mix. Shouts to both of the fellas for the heads up, click the covers or download link below and spin it for some holiday goodness. Enjoy!

Ritchcraft – Say It Ain’t So EP

Say It Ain't So

I posted one of Ritchcraft’s remixes and promised there would be an EP when he finished his weekly series. Well, the time has come to unleash it!

The Nova Scotia, Canada producer’s heavy work culminates in Say It Ain’t So, a 12-track EP with remixed verses from Jay-Z, Nas, The Roots, AZ, Saigon, plus original cuts from Halifax reps Kayo, CooLEra and even the man Ritchcraft himself.

My personal favorites are “Whose World Is This,” a reinterpretation of Nasir’s “The World Is Yours” with its groovin’ bassline & sweet vocal flip and AZ’s “The Come Up” as the verses flow over a break-beat and orchestral strings.

You can download the full EP at the Bandcamp link below, and feel free to hit me or Ritch up and let us know what you think. Enjoy!

[Final Post] A Tribe Called Quest Weekend: The Lost Tribes (Compilation) [Japan] – 2006

The Lost Tribes

Download: A Tribe Called Quest – The Lost Tribes (Compilation) [Japan] – 2006

We’ve made it (finally, right? Ha) all the way through A Tribe Called Quest Weekend, give yourselves a round of applause! For the final post, I’m dropping this compilation of rare material that came out in Japan a few years ago.

As of 2006, “I C U (Doin’ It)” is the most recent Tribe song, which was released in 2003. “That Shit” is the only A Tribe Called Quest song released with vocals by Jay Dee. The “Scenario Remix” was the B-side to the original. The O\original “Jam” can be found on Beats, Rhymes and Life, as well as the original “Stressed Out.”

Thanks for ridin’ with me this weekend. Let me know if there’s any Tribe stuff you want to see, and I might post it. If you have trouble downloading anything, I’ll re-up links per request.

Stay tuned for more “Weekend” dedications to come in the future, Enjoy!
