Buy J. Cole’s “Lights Please” on iTunes

Lights Please

What started with a post featuring my favorite song from J Cole’s The Warm Up has turned into the most popular post in HTT‘s 6-month history (over 15,000 page views since July!), probably because I typed up the full lyrics to the mastered version as soon as it dropped.

Now, Cole & Roc Nation have decided to push “Lights Please” as the digital single, which is a great decision in my eyes. Since the first time I heard it, I felt it had the potential to achieve enormous success as a single because it blends the right amount of catchiness with real lyrics that many people can relate to. Plus, as Hov’s protege, people expect Cole to be talented from the jump – this song will reinforce that notion.

Do your part to support one of the year’s best songs by grabbing it at iTunes  for less than a 6-piece order of chicken nuggets.

And don’t forget to tell everyone where to find the lyrics – I really appreciate the love & support that everyone has shown to this historic post.

Special shouts to Nation and his new blog The Calm for the heads up, Enjoy!

Babygirl

Us

I wasn’t there babygirl, but I’m here
I dunno what to say, I just hear
If there’s one wish I could make true
I would shoulder that pain and take it all from you

Don’t run babygirl, don’t run
You gotta face what you’re fighting head-on
Only one thing I could say in truth
Gotta deal with the demons before they deal with you

I’m feelin’ this cut off the advance for Brother Ali’s upcoming album Us. Called “Babygirl,” it addresses the past demons haunting a special female and Ali’s solution to overcome them.  Backed by smooth production by Ant, this is a typical heartfelt track from the Minneapolis MC.

Pre-order your copy of Us now at Fifth Element, the album drops September 22nd. Enjoy!

Here I Am (Full Lyrics)

BK-One

Here’s a fresh collab for your Saturday afternoon. Brother Ali’s DJ BK-One is hopping behind the boards for his upcoming LP Radio do Canibal, and “Here I Am” is the first leak off the project featuring Phonte, Brother Ali & The Grouch.

If this is any indication of the album, I’m dumb excited for it! Here’s the release:

Better known as Brother Ali’s DJ, BK-One takes his years of experience as a DJ and puts on his producer hat joining forces with up and coming Twin Cities beatsmith Benzilla to craft a Brazilian musical bed for some of Hip Hop’s most engaging MC’s. Rádio Do Canibal features appearances by Scarface, Slug (Atmosphere), Black Thought (The Roots), Brother Ali, Raekwon (Wu-Tang Clan), Murs (Living Legends), Phonte (Little Brother), Haiku D’ Etat (Aceyalone, Myka 9 & Abstract Rude), Blueprint, P.O.S. (Doomtree), The Grouch (Living Legends), I Self Devine, Toki Wright, Aby Wolf and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

This one’s got a fresh summer BBQ feel with a groovin’ bassline and sparkling chimes. I hooked up the download link and typed up the full lyrics below.

Shouts to the homie BMUSE at Always Hustle for the heads up, Enjoy!

BK-One ft. Phonte, Brother Ali & The Grouch – Here I Am

Lyrics:

Phonte

Back in the day, they used to say I was a man-child
Moms looked at me, was like “Oh you a man now?”
Taught me to walk like a warrior, eyes up, shoulders back
Lookin’ like a aggin ’bout to stand trial
Made me exactly who I am now
It made me one of the livest aggins walkin’ and realest aggins spittin’ hands down
Taught me to stand down
And always man up
‘Cause then I’d never give in to a hand-out
One man army slash rhymer martyr
Don’t need a little guac, I need the whole avacado
That bullshit they play ain’t got nothin’ to do with ‘Te
That’s Maury Povich rap, homie I am not the father
And I am not to bother
With those who don’t do the real
I be on that Sugar Hill, no business with a Carter
My purpose is to separate the classic from the fodder
‘Te bring it, and make you sing it like the alma mater
Let’s go!

Chorus:

Like the way I move, like the way I groove out on the floor
Like the way I walk, like the way, yeah it’s all yours
Make the fellas rock, make the ladies sing, girl that’s my jam
Except nothin’ less ’cause if you want the best, then here I am

Brother Ali

Yeah baby, here I’m is
They say Ali bout his, he’ll never be outdid
Fuck bein’ half great, I got to be five-fifths
Everybody clap your hands to the beatbox kids
I believe in this shit
Could never be opposite
If I didn’t, I would not and try to eat off of this
They talkin’ bout the greatest MC’s ever lived
Tryina’ give ’em good reason to put me on that list

Shit, you ain’t in this discussion
You simply interruptin’
I’m as good as gone, y’all ain’t good for nothin’
My stomach grumblin’, isn’t it?
Man we eatin’, y’all are just bitin’, that’s inconsiderate
Quit your nibblin’, nobody’s feelin’ it
You beatin’ a dead horse, that’s not killin’ it
We livin’ this, y’all are visitin’
Get a grip, it’s never too late for you to fix your shit
It ain’t set in stone ’til you dead and gone
Don’t want ’em sayin’ stud walked tough but could’ve flown
So when the sun rise, the shine get on his grind
He could look down and smile and see that I’m on mine
.. Phonte, out, yeah!

Chorus

The Grouch

Have you ever seen a dreamer lock his dreams up?
Sabatoged himself like his thoughts don’t mean enough?

Well I ain’t tryina’ be that, you got me cleaned up
Can mix the yellow with the blue and get the green stuff
Ain’t no time to be scared and sad
What I gots much rarer and that
I do care but in fact
I don’t care what you think
Though I been there before, I now know more
I more know me
I’m livin’ to my full capacity

Tryina’ spill a little game and soak a splash or three
Focus past the obvious, ask of me
More than ya average, half a G
‘Cause I could hear the birds chirpin’ and feel the words workin’
Whether curb surfin’ or smokin’ herb surfin’
Today you’ll catch a wave
Let your guard and be free or that’s a slave
.. And this is true!

Chorus

Cruise in 5th Gear

MM3.5

With all the Joe Budden hate around the internets for various reasons, some people forget his epic Mood Muzik mixtape series. Here’s a gem “5th Gear” from the 3rd installment in 2007, just to remind those who think he’s the weakest link in Slaughterhouse know that dude can still rip a track.

Download link for the no DJ version and lyrics below, Enjoy!

Joe Budden – 5th Gear

Look, come and cruise wit’ me
I’m good in any hood, no matter who’s wit’ me
My mind on gettin’ money, bumpin’ new 50
Or my mind was off music til Clue hit me
And told me keep it on the booth strictly
So I step in, watchin’ my surroundings and my settings
Then I let the Percocet set in
Rough year, lost five of my homeboys
I ain’t worried ’bout it, y’all alive, just home boy
I feel like I’m the last real aggin left
Or, maybe all the real aggins just left

We growin’ extinct, we like dinosaurs
There’s only a few exceptions, so minus y’all
The greatest rapper alive is wearin’ suits and ties
So you got a buncha’ wack aggins sayin’ they him
Used to be if you strive for so somethin’ you could achieve it
Now just say shit, these aggins’ll believe it
I’m done screamin’ out jump off rules
Lost my girl, broke all of my jump off rules
Kept fuckin’ the side chick, so a aggin lied more
Picked her up in the woman’s car, that I ride for
Creepin’, I would hide more
Got confused as to who I’m supposed to fight for
I can’t even blame the jump, it was my fault
‘Cause I gave ‘hr the gun and she killed the only bitch I would die for
So the noise is called for
When you goin’ through T’s type of pain
Dog, ya voice gets altered
Know it’s hard to stay calm
Gon’ need State Farm
When you fuckin’ with a con
No, not Akon
I’m high off life, a walkin’ napalm
Fastballs comin’ at ’em from a Dice-K arm
Ridin’ suspended L
No wonder I’m on fire, I already been through Hell
So, when the the world’s against you, well
Naw I never snitch, but I’ll let the pencil tell

I suffer from wrong thinkin’
So I avoid straightjackets
And the bitch that dumped Sean Kingston
Better they respect you then to fear you
I learned that starin’ at the world in my rear view

But come get me, cocksucker I dare you
Rather box a felon than a aggin that’s fearful

Want a clear view, without a clear view
I put the wall up but thoughts just tear through
God, I hear you, givin’ me a earful
But I’ma cruise in 5th gear until I’m near you

Eye of a tiger, naw, a sniper with great aim
I won’t be another great slain
Takes planes, embrace pain
Ask Eddie Griffin
You gun lose gon’ lose everytime goin’ up against a freight train
Niggas bleed like us, we in the same world
Keep the Patron comin’, tryin’ make the date hurl
It’s a few aggins checkin’ out my chain pearls
Go ahead, try’ n lift somethin’ that’chu can’t curl
Far from Wayne’s World
If life’s a bitch, it ain’t just R. Kelly and Ush’ fuckin’ the same girl
OG swag, walk gotta’ limp in it
It’s my world, everybody’s payin’ rent in it
I left Jers, see I took flight on ’em
Dudes tried to take the crown, didn’t look right on ’em
How you gon’ fuck wit’ a crook, heist want ’em
Play Vanilla Ice, I get Suge Knight on ’em
Meanest Porsches, gleamin’ crosses
Came from Queens to restore this
Deemed it in orbit
When the red carpet rolled out, that mean it’s bosses
Don’t get it fucked up, we had fiends before this
My third-eye sharp, so keen, it’s gorgeous
I’ve seen it all, even Halloween in August
Gun in my hand
The game used to make you sell ya soul
Now it gotta’ come wit’ a dance

I’m on the clear view
Without a clear view
I put the wall up, but thoughts just tear through
God I hear you, givin’ me a earful
But I’ma cruise in 5th gear until I’m near you

J. Cole – Lights Please (Mastered) & Full Lyrics

Warm Up

While the internets wait for Shawn Carter’s new single with Rih Rih and ‘Yeezy, we’ll have to settle for a new version of an extremely dope track from Hov’s Roc Nation signee J. Cole.

I updated my original post with the full lyrics, but it seems that North Carolina’s promising young MC liberated the mastered version of the song of the year best jam off his Warm Up mixtape, “Lights Please.”

Peep the download link below and the full-length lyrics after the jump. Song spotted at Nah Right, lyrics typed by yours truly.. Enjoy!

Download: J. Cole – Lights Please (Mastered) [Dom’s note: New Link as of 2/7/10!]

Random Lyrics & Sample: OutKast – Claimin’ True

OutKast

Rockin’ with the iTunes on shuffle today, I came across one of my favorite jams from OutKast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik that I had to share with all my fellow hip-hop heads.

On “Claimin’ True,” Big Boi and Andre spit that real ish that permeated their early catalog. This here track is a fine example of the lyrical onslaught that the duo was will always be capable of whenever they stepped into the Dungeon. Quotables abound.

As previously noted, Organized Noize Productions interpolated Steve Miller Band’s “The Window” for the gritty instrumental. As Busta Rhymes would say, this one breaks your neck.

Check the song and original below, then the lyrics after the jump. Enjoy!

One Day

One Day

Here at HTT, I am a firm believer that there really are only two types of musicgood and Soulja Boy Chester French bad. Though my primary focus is on hip-hop and the music that has influenced the genre, I want to spread good music of all sorts. Which brings me to Matisyahu’s newest single, “One Day.”

My younger sister put me on to the Hassidic Jew’s reggae-rap a few years back and after I saw him perform alongside the Wailers in the Big Apple, I gained respect for his vision and have been a supportive fan ever since.

Similar to Matis’ past efforts, “One Day” is an uplifting, quixotic anthem that attempts to unify the people. It’s off his upcoming album Light, set for an August 25th release date.

I typed up the lyrics beneath the video, plus provided a link to purchase the track at Amazon. As an added bonus, I posted the DJ Michael Watts remix of his hit “Jerusalem” just because.

Shouts to Adam for the video, Enjoy!

Sometimes I lay under the moon
And thank God I’m breathing
And I pray, don’t take me soon
‘Cause I am here for a reason

Sometimes in my tears I drown
But I never let it get me down
So when negativity surrounds
I know some day it’ll all turn around, because..

All my life I’ve been waiting for
I’ve been praying for
For the people to say
That we don’t wanna fight no more

There’ll be no more war
And our children will play

One day, one day
One day
One day, one day
One day

It’s not about win or lose
‘Cause we all lose
When they feed on the souls of the innocent
Blood-drenched pavement
Keep on moving
Though the water stay raging

In this maze, you can lose your way (your way)
It may drive you crazy
But don’t let it phase you, no way (no way)

Sometimes in my tears I drown
But I never let it get me down
So when negativity surrounds
I know some day it’ll all turn around, because..

All my life I’ve been waiting for
I’ve been praying for
For the people to say
That we don’t wanna fight no more
There’ll be no more war
And our children will play

One day, one day
One day
One day, one day
One day

One day this world’ll change
Treat people the same
Stop with the violence
Stall with the hate

One day we’ll all be free
And proud to be
Under the same sun

Singin’ songs of freedom like

One day, one day
One day, one day..

All my life I’ve been waiting for
I’ve been praying for
For the people to say
That we don’t wanna fight no more
There’ll be no more war
And our children will play

One day, one day
One day
One day, one day
One day
